Poking People with Poker
Draw poker is probably the most popular form of this ancient game, but in casino or house-sponsored games, stud is usually the rule.
Either way, gamblers have always loved online poker sites and they still do today, from Tuesday night penny ante players, right on up to the high rollers of the entertainment and gambling world.
A professional gambler can usually pass by a roulette wheel without breaking stride, disdain baccarat, and give craps and blackjack only the most casual nod.
For the full-time bettor, sports are really the only action that counts. And then there's poker. Not everyone who's good at handicapping football teams, and beating the odds in baseball betting, is also good at poker, but you can be sure they all love it.
The famous riverboat gamblers spread the game up and down the Mississippi, where its fame and attractiveness grew. Part of what made poker so appealing then, and now, is the aspect of expertise attached to the game.
The real poker shark, the total master, seemed to be almost superhuman. The mere mastery of the emotions--- or at least their display on the face--- puts the poker player into a different category from the rest of us.
Poker, like chess, "takes a day to learn and a lifetime to master".
There are so many variations on the old game in use today that they could fill a separate reference book. But the old standards are still favored by gamblers who chase boredom by upping the stakes, rather than putting new twists into the rules.
Stud poker has always been favored by gamblers, which may be why, when after World War II the casinos began to let it be known that they did have poker games on the premises, those games were almost always stud.
Professional gamblers usually specialize in just one kind of poker, say lowball stud, and only play for money in games of the kind they favor.
But the love of the game is so strong among bettors that you often find gamblers sitting in on games, just for the fun of it, where they have no investment.
In draw poker, players may draw cards from the deck to improve their hands, while casting off unwanted cards. In stud poker, after being dealt opening cards down (5-card stud is one, 7-card stud is two), each player is dealt a new card, face-up, with every round of betting, until the final card, which is dealt facing down.
In each round, the player whose exposed hand ranks highest bets first. On the final round, every player turns over his or her hole card, and the moment of truth arrives.
In one way, it is easier to bluff in stud poker, because you can see what (or most of what) your opponents hold.
On the other hand, if you have two queens showing and your hole card is a two, you can bet as if you had three queens and then be embarrassed when two queens are dealt to other players on the next round.
The successful bluff, then, is a tactic that can win big money for the expert who knows how to use it.
Beginners, generally speaking, should play as straight as they know how, while learning to cultivate a 'poker face'.
